Each year, March is National Social Work Month in recognition of the contributions social workers make in our society. The theme adopted by the Canadian Association of Social Work (CASW) Board this year is “The Power to Empower” as empowering others is a fundamental goal of all social workers. To celebrate National Social Worker Month, we are featuring the perspective of one of our most experienced Social Workers and one of our newest employees.

Deborah Clarey began her employment in Child Protection on PEI in January 2011. Deborah has worked as a Social Worker in several communities across four provinces: Newfoundland, Alberta, Ontario and now PEI. She has worked both as a front-line Social Worker and as a Supervisor.

Deborah was drawn to Social Work as a profession due to her interest in helping people and being intrigued by their interaction. She describes Child Protection as a myriad of different experiences; sad, joyous, shocking and scary are just a few descriptions. Deborah enjoys looking back over her career at the individuals and families who have progressed in some way due to her interventions, however hard fought they may have been at the time, and sees this as a great achievement.

Krista Giddings began her employment with Child Protection Services in February 2017. What excites Krista most about working in Child Protection is the ability to work closely with families to help them feel like they are part of the community and the ability to give, as well as to receive, in ways that make their lives and those around them better.

Krista believes the most important role for a Social Worker is to facilitate and empower families to achieve all they can, to surpass obstacles and barriers that otherwise prevent them from experiencing a quality life that every person deserves.
