Applying for a Child Support Order

Le contenu suivant est seulement disponible en anglais.

When a relationship ends, parents may be able to come to an agreement on a suitable amount for regular child support payments without going to court. The Child Support Guidelines are the rules parents (and the courts) are required to follow for child support decisions. Parents can ask for help reaching an agreement through Child-Focused Family Mediation

Parents who cannot reach an agreement, or who want their agreement put into a court order, must apply to the court to get obtain  a child support order.

How do I apply for a child support order?

The Child Support Guidelines offices in Charlottetown and Summerside provide information on the Child Support Guidelines and provide assistance to clients applying to the courts for first-time child support or for a variation of child support in an existing order or agreement. The office can provide assistance to both parents.

Child Support Guidelines Officers are not lawyers and do not provide legal advice. As they do not represent either parent, they will assist both parents through the court process. There is no charge for this service, with the exception of photocopying or serving documents.
