The Eye See…Eye Learn program provides all preschool and kindergarten-aged children in Prince Edward Island with a free eye exam and a free pair of glasses, if needed.
Who is the Program for?
To be eligible for the Eye See…Eye Learn program, the child must:
- be enrolled or able to enroll in a preschool or kindergarten program;
- have a Prince Edward Island health card .
Why is it important for my child to have an eye exam?
When a child starts school, 80% of their learning is through sight. One in four school-aged children has a vision problem. Young children rarely complain of vision problems because they don't know they have them. They believe what they see is normal.
Regular eye exams can help detect vision or eye health problems. The earlier a vision or eye health problem is identified, the more likely it is to be corrected. It is recommended that babies have an eye exam as early as six months old.
The Eye See… Eye Learn program encourages all Island children of preschool or kindergarten age to participate.
How can my child participate?
Step 1:
Call your optometrist to schedule an eye exam for your child. If you need help finding an optometrist, see the list of optometrists in Prince Edward Island .
Step 2:
Visit your optometrist for an eye exam. Bring your child's PEI health card to the appointment.
Step 3:
Do you have private insurance that covers vision care?
Please bring your insurance card to your appointment. Costs will be billed to your insurance first. Any remaining amount will be covered by Health PEI. Individuals with private health insurance may be required to pay the costs and then be reimbursed based on their insurance policy coverage. Your optometrist will guide you through this process.
Invoice submission
To submit an invoice to Health PEI to be reimbursed for an eye exam (co-pay):
- Complete the online reimbursement form (in English) and submit any related private insurance documents and your invoice.
Don't have private insurance that covers vision care?
Health PEI will cover the full cost of the eye exam.
What does the optometrist check during my child's eye exam?
The optometrist checks:
- visual acuity;
- amblyopia, strabismus;
- myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism;
- eye coordination, visual tracking and depth perception;
- color vision;
- eye health;
- family medical history, general health and lifestyle.
If your child needs glasses, they will receive a free pair through the Eye See… Eye Learn program, sponsored by Bo-Optik, Vision Tech Labs, and the Prince Edward Island Association of Optometrists (PEIAO). Glasses covered by the Eye See… Eye Learn program can be obtained from participating optometry clinics .
