Nutrition Month in March is a time to celebrate Prince Edward Island food products and learn how to fuel our bodies with the healthiest foods and beverages possible.

The national theme for Nutrition Month 2017 is “Take the Fight Out of Food! Spot the Problem. Get the Facts. Seek Support.” There will be various programs happening across the province that are listed at Nutrition Month Activities.

“Eating healthy food like fruits and vegetables is something most of us try to do each day because we know it helps maintain a healthy body weight and prevent disease,” Health and Wellness Minister Robert Henderson said. “We are Canada’s Food Island for a reason, because there are many fresh, local foods available here that can help Islanders make the most nutritious food choices possible for themselves and their families.”

As part of enhancing health promotion in Prince Edward Island, the Department of Health and Wellness recently hired two Healthy Eating Program officers. Their role includes providing nutrition supports for schools, early learning centres, recreation facilities, institutions, workplaces, and communities across the province.

“Healthy eating is a shared responsibility,” said Sharla Goodwin, Healthy Eating Program officer. “Through our work, we want to partner with community groups to help establish healthy eating environments across the province, in spaces where we live, learn, work, and play.”

“Our goal,” Healthy Eating Program Officer Morgan Palmer added, “is to create food environments where making a healthy choice is the easier choice.”

The Healthy Eating Program Officers work with stakeholder groups to help create, implement, and promote adherence to nutritional policies and guidelines. Their aim is to support community action for healthy eating and build capacity at the local level.
