The newest member of Holland College’s Board of Governors is looking forward to her next challenge.

Montague resident Candace Cormier has volunteered with the Red Cross, CIBC Run for the Cure, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and she is an auxiliary officer with the RCMP. Holland College’s Board of Governors will be her first time volunteering on such a board but she’s looking at it as a learning opportunity.

“I’m a big volunteer person. For me it’s rewarding when you work at these things to give back to the community,” she said.

“Holland College is a great asset for all Islanders; for methis board is a good fit because I’m more of a hands-on person. It will broaden my horizons so I can be on other boards in the future.”

Candace applied for the board through Engage PEI, which helps Islanders volunteer to fill vacancies on more than 70 provincial government agencies, boards or commissions. During the daytime Cormier works as an office manager for Kent Building Supplies, where she's been for the past two decades. Before that she was in the military and lived all across Canada – in Alberta, Quebec, the North Pole, Nova Scotia and Ontario.

She enjoys the small town life in Montague, cycling and walking and spending time with her son, now 30.

And, she says, she’s looking forward to spending time getting to know her fellow board members at Holland College and seeing what needs to be done.

Engage PEI provides opportunities to help other Islanders who share a common desire to make Prince Edward Island a better place by getting involved with the provincial government. Between 10 and 20 positions become available on government agencies, boards, and commissions every month.

It’s important to note that some vacancies require specific skill sets, so remember to regularly check for openings that suit your experience or interests.
