The Prince Edward Island government wants to hear from Islanders living with diabetes - how programs and services have helped  – and/or how they could be improved.

“Hearing from the public is the best way for Health PEI to see if there are gaps in health programs and services, and how best to fill those gaps,” said Martha St. Pierre, registered nurse and provincial diabetes program lead.

Martha said Islanders and health care providers can help one another by learning as much as possible about the disease, and how the system can better meet the needs.

There will be four focus group sessions across the province early in June. Information gathered from Islanders at the sessions will help government create a new multi-year action plan, which will be released late in 2018.

Each session runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Islanders are asked to call 1-888-854-7244 to pre-register and get more details:

  • June 5 - Summerside

  • June 7 - Charlottetown

  • June 12 - O’Leary

  • June 13 - Montague

More than 15,000 Islanders live with diabetes. On average, 860 new cases of diabetes are diagnosed on Prince Edward Island each year. In the four years since the PEI Diabetes Strategy 2014-2017 was released, more than 7,500 Islanders have accessed services offered by the provincial diabetes program.

“Adopting the first-ever provincial diabetes strategy in 2014 was a huge step forward in helping Islanders manage their diabetes and improve their quality of life,” Health and Wellness Minister Robert Mitchell said. “It’s important for Islanders to share their experiences as we work toward renewing the action plan and our commitment to ensuring Islanders have access to the necessary services and supports that best meet their needs.”
