Our History

The first public library in O’Leary officially opened on March 1, 1934 as part of the PEI Carnegie Demonstration Project which established free public library services in communities across the province. The project was funded from 1933-1936 by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The original library was located within the local Orange Hall.

The O’Leary Library would remain within the Orange Hall until 1967, when it was relocated to a new and larger facility called the O’Leary Centennial Library – Museum. This facility was owned and maintained by a local non-profit group called the O'Leary Museum and Library Association Ltd. The Library would remain in this building until the 1990s.

In 1995, the Community of O'Leary received funding to open a new Community Complex – a multi-purpose facility that would house the municipal office, fire hall, and other community group offices. With the construction of this facility, the O'Leary Museum and Library Association Ltd. turned over responsibility for the public library to the Community and the library was moved from its former location to within the Community Complex. This location – now known as the O’Leary Town Complex - continues to be the home of the O’Leary Public Library.
