National Non-Smoking Week: Get free help to quit
National Non-Smoking Week, January 18-24, is a reminder that quitting smoking is one of the most important steps people can take to protect their health and they don’t have to do it alone.
The provincial government encourages anyone who is ready to quit smoking or vaping to use the free supports available across the province to help people of all ages quit.
“Nicotine addiction is powerful, and quitting isn’t easy but it is possible, and help is available. Through PEI’s smoking cessation program, Islanders can access support in a way that works for them, close to home, and without cost.”
— Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Heather Morrison
Smoking is a leading cause of preventable illness and death and increases the risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung disease, and diabetes. Quitting at any age can significantly improve health and quality of life.
“Quitting is often a process. Most people try more than once before they quit for good, and that’s normal. Every attempt is a step forward. With the right support, many people are able to reduce or quit smoking and see real health benefits quickly.”
— Dr. Morrison
The PEI Smoking Cessation Program makes it easier for Islanders to get help, including counselling and quit aids, at no cost. More than 9,000 Island residents have taken part in the program since December 2019.
For more information on quitting and the supports available, visit the PEI Smoking Cessation Program, contact the Smokers’ Helpline at 1-877-513-5333 or SmokersHelpline.ca, or speak with a primary care nurse or a local pharmacist.
