Province amends 2026-27 school calendar
The start date for students for the 2026-27 school year is changing after a review and feedback from education stakeholders.
The first day for students will now be Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
Last year, for the first time, the Department of Education and Early Years released a two-year calendar for Island schools. A review of that calendar recently took place, and an amended start date was recommended. The original start date for students was Friday, September 4.
“Labour Day falls as late as it possibly can in 2026 and that meant in order to meet the required number of classroom days for Island students, we had them starting on the Friday before the long weekend. However, after discussions with various stakeholders including the PEI Teachers’ Federation and CUPE, we moved the start date to the Tuesday after Labour Day and moved two professional development days for staff to the week before the long weekend. This will ensure that students achieve the required number of days and that the normal expectations of parents and caregivers will be met.”
