Harvest season is time for caution on Island roads
The agriculture community and Island motorists both have roles in maintaining safe driving practices during the busy harvest season.
Island motorists are asked to be patient, slow down, stay well back and ensure a clear view and sufficient distance to safely pass farm equipment. Motorists are reminded that mud from farm vehicles can create slippery road conditions on roads where fields are being harvested.
For the farming community, it is important to ensure proper lighting on equipment and that loose products, like grain, are covered, mark vehicle extremities and use slow-moving vehicle signs. Regulations require that round bales and tote boxes be strapped down with properly rated components and tensioning devices to maintain secure loads while on Island roads.
“The agriculture industry, a major contributor to our Island economy, is heading into a very busy time of year. It is important that all road users employ defensive driving habits to ensure the safe transport of people and goods,” said Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Paula Biggar. “I would ask that drivers use caution and be mindful of their surroundings so that our Island roads are safe for everyone.”
Agriculture is a key contributor to Prince Edward Island’s economy. Farm cash receipts from 2016 totalled $487 million. The industry employs approximately 3,500 people primarily in rural communities.
