Statement by Minister Gilles Arsenault on Acadian Remembrance Day
Hon. Gilles Arsenault, Minister responsible for Acadian and Francophone Affairs, issued the following statement on Acadian Remembrance Day:
“Tomorrow, December 13, is Acadian Remembrance Day, a time to pause and honour the resilience and courage of the Acadian people. This day commemorates the tragic events of the Great Deportation, which began in 1755 when thousands of Acadians were forcibly displaced from their homes.
Acadians suffered great loss and many hardships, but they persevered and eventually returned to the Island.
As we reflect on this dark chapter of history, we also celebrate the vibrant Acadian culture in Prince Edward Island and in Canada and remember that the Acadian community is an integral part of our province’s fabric.
As the Minister responsible for Acadian and Francophone Affairs and as a proud Acadian myself, I take great pride in the strength and resilience of the Acadian community. Our government is committed to ongoing collaboration with the Acadian community to ensure it continues to thrive and that its rich heritage can be celebrated for generations to come.
I encourage all Islanders to take the time to learn more about the Great Deportation and the history of Acadians, who have greatly contributed to making our province what it is today.”
