Minister congratulates high school students on Island Speaker Series

A pilot project to engage youth and the community in celebrating local success in different careers could be expanded to all Prince Edward Island high schools by 2017, says Workforce and Advanced Learning Minister Richard Brown.

“This project is aimed at increasing awareness of the many career opportunities in our province and the importance of life-long learning and inclusive communities,” said Minister Brown. “Seeing the youth engaging with community leaders and celebrating a wide variety of Island career successes was most encouraging. Workforce and Advanced Learning is proud to sponsor the events.”

High school students from Westisle, Montague, and Charlottetown Rural put on Island Speaker Series events at their respective schools, which featured up to 10 speakers each evening from various backgrounds, including  immigration; entrepreneurship; adult literacy; apprenticeship; art; and Aboriginal Affairs. Guest speakers shared their stories on their career paths, their experiences, and both their successes and failures.

The events were organized and hosted by a high school leadership, career or global issues class.  Minister Brown presented each student with a certificate this week to congratulate and thank them for their efforts.

“The Island Speaker Series is aimed at demonstrating that different career paths can lead to great success,” said Minister Brown. “I encourage students to examine the wide range of career options which are open to them.”
