Poetry of excellence has been one of the great achievements of Prince Edward Islanders. Individuals such as John LePage, Larry Gorman and Lawrence Doyle were well-known in the 19th century. In the 20th century, Lucy Maud Montgomery and Milton Acorn are among the Islanders recognized for poetic ability. The creation of the post of provincial poet laureate helps to honour individuals who have made a major contribution to the literary life of the province.
What is the Poet Laureate?
The role of Poet Laurate is a special recognition given to a noted Island poet. Since 2002, Prince Edward Island's Poet Laureates have worked to:
- celebrate Prince Edward Island's culture, heritage, and people
- raise the profile of literature, especially poetry and poets, on Prince Edward Island
- promote literacy
How is the Poet Laureate chosen?
Poets writing in both English and French are eligible to be appointed. Candidates must also be:
- full-time residents of the province
- active as poets and recognized for their work
