The object of the Board is to ensure the provision in facilities of child care that is safe, of good quality and appropriate to the needs of children.

What is the function of the board?

The functions of the Board are:

  • (a) to license child care facilities and issue certificates to qualified persons;
  • (b) to advise on standards for facilities and minimum qualifications for certification;
  • (c) to monitor the operation of facilities and ensure adherence to prescribed standards;
  • (d) to advise the Minister on regulatory issues in the field of early childhood development and child care.

Primary Role:  Adjudicative

Material Role:

  • Advisory
  • Managerial/Oversight

How many people are on the board?

The Board shall consist of nine members appointed by the Minister, of whom:

  • one who is an employee of the Environmental Health Office of the Department of Health and Wellness;
  • one who is an employee of the Department of Education and Early Years;
  • one who is a representative of La Federation des Parents de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard Inc.;
  • two who are representatives of the Early Childhood Development Association;
  • three shall be members of the public at large, with one representative for each county;
  • one shall be a public officer, appointed by the Minister to be chairperson.

An understanding of the child care systems on PEI, as well as tribunal skills.

What are the nomination requirements?

All members are appointed by the Minister.

Will I get paid?

As per the Treasury Board Honoraria policy, this is a Category B Board and rates have been set as follows: Chair - $161/diem and Members - $109/diem.

What is the time commitment of the board?

Regular meetings set by Chair. Appointments shall be for a maximum of three years; members may be re-appointed but shall not serve more than two consecutive terms.
