Buying Cannabis on PEI

These questions and answers are related to the legalization of recreational cannabis.

Where can I buy legal cannabis?

There will be four cannabis retail stores in Prince Edward Island located in Charlottetown, Summerside, Montague, and in the West Prince region.

How were the four locations chosen?

The locations were chosen based on population. The province will review sales in different areas of the province and plan for future expansion if needed.

How much will it cost?

Cannabis pricing structures are still being finalized through ongoing dialogue with other provinces and negotiations with licensed producers. Pricing will be structured keeping in mind the goal of reducing the illegal market for cannabis.

What kinds of cannabis products will be for sale?

As permitted under the federal legislation, products will include cannabis flower, cannabis oil, and cannabis accessories. The cannabis products have not been finalized yet but customers can expect to see products with various THC and CBD levels. Other cannabis products, such as edibles, will not be sold until the federal government makes it legal.

What safeguards are in place to find safe locations for the stores?

Locations are required to maintain a respectful distance from schools, have the necessary security elements and ventilation systems and meet all the requirements in the request for proposals.

Will I be able to purchase cannabis online?

Yes, an online sales channel will provide all PEI residents with a safe, secure, and convenient way to legally purchase cannabis products.

Where will cannabis be delivered?

Cannabis will be delivered to any legal address on PEI.

How long will it take me to receive my online order?

Delivery times have not yet been determined, but we are working to plan for timely delivery.

Who will deliver cannabis, and how will underage online purchases be prevented?

We are still working to determine who will provide delivery services. Our goal is to ensure the secure and safe delivery of cannabis across the province. Additional details will be made public as soon as possible.

Will I be able to purchase seeds and seedlings?

The Province continues to explore having seeds and seedling for sale in PEI, although the supply chain variables associated with these products have not yet been finalized.

What measures will be in place to protect against underage in-store purchases?

The retailer will be responsible – as they are with sales of alcohol - to ensure that sales are only to people of legal age. Preventing cannabis sales to anyone under the legal purchasing age of 19, and/or to intoxicated people, will be taken very seriously. All retail staff will be well-trained in ID verification and responsible service.

Will those who require cannabis for medical purposes be able to purchase from PEI cannabis retail stores and online?

Medical users may choose to purchase recreational cannabis from PEI cannabis retail stores. The Government of Canada will continue to oversee the production and sale of medical cannabis. Under federal requirements, eligible persons could continue to access medical cannabis by purchasing directly from a federally licensed seller of cannabis for medical purposes.

What are the rules about taking cannabis across borders?

When in Canada, you are subject to the personal possession limits of the province you are in. Cannabis is not legal in all countries, so it is important that you understand and obey the laws of any country you are visiting.
