Community Leadership Program

Can I access resources through the Community Leadership Program? 

The Community Leadership Support Program provides sport, recreation, physical activity, and healthy living services to rural Prince Edward Island based on the three designated regional sport areas: Eastern, Central, and Western.

 The program is available to:

  • communities with existing recreation departments who have full-time recreation professional(s); and
  • incorporated regional sport and recreation councils.

How do I know if my municipality is eligible for program funding?

 Municipalities are eligible for funding if:

  • they have a population base of less than 10,000 people;
  • they have at least one full-time employee whose main focus is sport, recreation, physical activity or healthy living;
  • the employee has a degree or diploma, preferably in sport or recreation, or in a relevant field with some experience and background associated with sport, recreation, and healthy living;
  • they sign a contribution agreement that identifies the level of funding and describes the activities that must be completed through the year;
  • they received leadership funding in 2023-24; and
  • the total contribution does not exceed $5,000.

How do I know if I am eligible for program funding?

Incorporated regional sport and recreation councils are eligible for funding if:

  • They are volunteer-led.
  • They represent one of the three designated regions: Eastern, Central, Western.
  • They employ at least one employee whose main focus is sport, recreation, physical activity and healthy living.
  • They require the employee to have a degree or diploma, preferably in sport or recreation (or, in a relevant field with some experience and background associated with sport, recreation and healthy living).
  • The project plan was discussed with the regional coordinator assigned to the region. 
  • They sign a contribution agreement that describes the activities that must be completed throughout the year and their operation budget for the year. 
  • They received leadership funding in 2023-24.

How can I apply for the Community Leadership Program?

Divisional staff will contact each eligible community or regional council once the program is available in each fiscal year.

Is there a deadline to apply?

There is no deadline to apply.

Must I pay a fee to apply?

There is no fee to apply.

Are there special conditions for the Community Leadership Program?

Funded organizations must clearly support the physical activity work of the provincial government.
