Caring for Our Seniors

Seniors are a valued and important subset of the population in Prince Edward Island (PEI). Furthermore, seniors are the fastest growing segment of the populations in the Province. The Department of Health and Wellness commissioned Health HR Group and Hollander Analytical Services Ltd to complete a review of the continuum of care for seniors in PEI with the purpose of supporting the development of an integrated policy and program framework for delivering the best possible home, supportive residential and long term care services for seniors in PEI within the context of a fiscally sustainable health care system.

Caring for our Seniors suggests several important recommendations to improve the continuum of care for Island seniors. These recommendations will be given careful consideration and will inform future policy direction in the area of Seniors’ Health

One of the primary recommendations is to develop a strategic plan for seniors and the frail elderly in the province, which should aim to keep people healthy and living independently at home for as long as possible. This recommendation, along with the entire Caring for our Seniors report, has helped to inform the decision to develop a Senior’s Health and Wellness Strategy for PEI.

A Provincial Seniors Health and Wellness Strategy will support coordinated delivery of programs and services to seniors to improve care in a fiscally sustainable environment. A comprehensive seniors health and wellness strategy is needed to improve our senior services today and to meet the health needs of Islanders in the future. By taking action now, we will ensure that quality health services will continue to be available for all Islanders.
