Seniors Safe @ Home Program

If you need to make changes to your home in order to improve its accessibility to continue living there, you can apply to the Seniors Safe @ Home Program for between $2,000 and $10,000 in assistance to help with the cost. This funding is based on your annual income.

The modifications must be necessary for your accessibility, health, and safety. Modifications must relate to the senior applicant’s loss of ability and must provide improved access or increased physical safety to the home. Portable devices are not eligible.

Am I eligible for assistance for renovating my home?

You are eligible to apply if:

  • You are age 60 or over at the time of application; and
  • you are a PEI resident (have a PEI Health Card) and a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident;
  • the senior applicant’s income only or the senior’s combined income (if living with your spouse or partner) is $50,000 or less;*
  • the property is your principle residence and you currently reside in the home that;
  • you, your spouse, or family member own, or you have a life interest in the property; (rental properties are not eligible)
  • you have not met the maximum grant through previous applications to the PEI Home Renovation Programs.

* income of other household members is not considered with this program only.

How do I apply?

Fill in the application for the PEI Home Renovation Programs with all relevant details. Sign the declaration acknowledging your understanding of the program rules, and sign the CRA consent section (in the application) authorizing proof of income.

Prioritize your requests (in the application) to renovations that meet your greatest need, as funding is limited (see maximum grant scale below). Use the Seniors Safe @ Home Self Assessment Guide to help determine your needs. Any incomplete applications will not be processed.

Send your completed application to PEI Home Renovation Programs (PEI HRP):

  • Fax: (902) 368-3394
  • In person or by mail: Sherwood Business Centre, 161 St. Peter’s Road, Box 2000, Charlottetown, PE C1A 7N8

How does the program work?

Once your application is received, it goes through an intake process to determine that it meets all program criteria & eligibility. We then follow up with a Letter of Consideration for funding and the next steps in the process.

  • To obtain final approval for funding, submit 2 competitive quotes for review within 90 days of receiving your letter. If more time is needed to secure quotes, you must contact our office to request an extension.
  • Supporting documents may be included with your Letter of Consideration to assist you with getting proper, detailed quotes.
  • The quotes will be reviewed and details verified for eligible renovation requests.
  •  An official approval letter stating the successful contractor, and the grant amount (see maximum grant scale below) that will be funded by the PEIHRP programs, will be mailed to you.
  • You will have a period of 6 months as of the approval letter date to complete the approved work, with an option to request an extension, if required. Failure to complete the work or contact our office for an extension will result in an automatic closing of your file.
  • Your application will remain active for a maximum period of one year from the date our office receives it.
  • If for any reason you fail to complete the approved renovations within that time, your file will be closed, and you will need to re-apply and be assessed again for funding eligibility.

Things you need to know…

  • Any renovations started or completed prior to approval are not eligible for a grant.
  • Eligible renovation requests must satisfy a “must have” essential repair, and not a “want to have” cosmetic upgrade to the home. (ie. like refresh painting, upgrade flooring, changing fixtures)
  • Renovations outside the home footprint (ie. Driveway, shed, detached garage) are not eligible for renovations or repairs.
  • Heat pumps, storm doors are not eligible renovations under the PEI HRP.
  • Only the income of the senior applicant or the combined income of the applicant and their spouse or partner are considered in the calculation of the grant provided.
  • If you are applying for additional funding under the PEI HRP as a person with a disability, you must submit a medical verification form with your application indicating the permanent disability, and the necessary modifications to the home to improve accessibility or life safety.
  • Payments for approved work are completed once invoices and Request for Payment (required) and Payee forms (if applicable) are provided to our office.
  • Post-inspections by qualified staff may be necessary to ensure compliance with building codes and industry standards prior to payment being released.
  • Once the maximum grant (based on combined income) is received, you are not eligible for another grant within 15 years.
