Islanders may recognize the grey shirts of Team Rubicon Canada from their response during Hurricane Fiona, a group known for showing up before, during, and after disasters. But what many may not realize is that this humanitarian organization supports its members just as much as it serves the communities they help.

Comprised of veterans, first responders, and passionate civilians, Team Rubicon Canada responds to severe weather, wildfires, and other natural disasters across Canada. Volunteers, known as Greyshirts, work alongside local emergency services to clear debris, restore access, provide mitigation services, and support long-term recovery efforts as requested.

Joel Johnson is Team Rubicon Canada’s Director, Brand and Communications, and a former paramedic of almost 20 years.

“Not only do Greyshirts help those in need during disasters, but they are also helping their own.”

With a membership base made up of veterans, first responders, and passionate civilians, Team Rubicon Canada provides many with a renewed sense of purpose and a place to serve and belong.

“A lot of our members come from careers where they wore a uniform,” Johnson explains.

“Joining Team Rubicon Canada offers them a renewed sense of identity and community. When people and communities are in the wake of a disaster, we are there to help. We want to continue to serve.”

Team Rubicon Canada operates nationwide, with local teams spread across the country. Deployments are made at the request of municipal or provincial governments, and volunteers travel to where they are needed most, working in close collaboration with local emergency organizations like EMO, the Canadian Red Cross and more.

Johnson says the work is incredibly rewarding.

“We’re providing our skills and experience in a meaningful way, helping people when they need it most, sharing their stories, and witnessing the incredible impact volunteers have. The resilience shown by communities during difficult times is truly inspiring, and we’re honored to play even a small part in their journey toward recovery."

In Atlantic Canada there are over 650 members of Team Rubicon Canada, ready to serve and help when needed.
