Island Youth to Benefit from Healthy Meals This Summer

Minister of Social Development and Seniors Barb Ramsay (centre), joins (from left to right) Chef Kevin Bottrill, Betsy Cormier, Duke Cormier, and Chef Steve Gallant from Fiveeleven West in Summerside.

For families facing food insecurity, five healthy meals a week for their children can make a major positive difference over the summer months. That’s why the Provincial Government is once again supporting the Children’s Summer Food Program in 2025.

“We know there are Island families struggling to put food on the table in this time of high inflation and high food prices, and this program is an important part of our efforts to support them. As mandated by the Poverty Elimination Strategy Act, our government remains committed to addressing food insecurity in PEI and we have made substantial efforts in this area.”

The Children’s Summer Food Program is primarily intended for families currently receiving financial support through social assistance or assured income programs. Families not enrolled in these programs but experiencing financial hardship may complete a registration form to apply.

This program was established in 2021. It delivers five nutritious frozen meals each week in July and August to children of families facing food insecurity.  It also helps fill the gap left when school food programs pause for the summer.

Meals are sourced from local restaurants or catering companies and delivered to homes across the province.

With a budgeted investment of $600,000, the Children’s Summer Food program is expected to feed hundreds of Island youth this summer.

“We value our community, and all the support we’ve received over the years, so we strive to make a positive impact where we can,” adds Duke Cormier, owner of Fiveeleven West in Summerside, one of the food suppliers for the program. “Knowing that we are helping families who are struggling, and giving kids the nutrition they need to be healthy makes us proud to be a part of this effort.”
