Investing in infrastructure –

An expanded L.M. Montgomery Elementary School will be better equipped to serve a growing student population.

Construction has begun on the 16,300 square-foot project, which includes 10 new classrooms and several other working spaces for students and staff. The addition will create space for 160 additional students and is expected to be completed in August 2019.

“With development in the area growing quickly, we are pleased to make this investment to support the many families moving to the north of Charlottetown,” said Premier Wade MacLauchlan, who is the MLA for the area.

“The $5.3 million expansion of L. M. Montgomery Elementary will enhance teaching and learning by current students while making room for future student population growth.”

Besides the 10 additional classrooms (and the removal of two existing mobile classrooms) the project includes:

  • a large activity room, which will be half the size of an elementary gym;
  • student breakout rooms;
  • a new teacher planning centre; and
  • added washrooms.

A construction planning committee provided input to the design of the project. The committee includes representatives of the education and transportation departments, Public Schools Branch, the school, and the Home and School Association.

“We were pleased to be able to respond to parent and staff requests to add space, and to improve the safety and function of the existing school,” said Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Jordan Brown. “The project includes funding for a new gym floor and lighting, as well as ventilation and shelving in the student locker area. It will also bring the playground equipment closer to the school and improve student safety by separating the student drop-off area from other parking lots.”

The recommendation to expand L. M. Montgomery Elementary was made by the Public Schools Branch Board of Directors following the recent school review, which was conducted to address school capacity issues over the next five years.

The L. M. Montgomery addition was designed by Chandler Architecture Inc. The site and foundation work is being done by WM&M 1993 Ltd. The project timeline remains on track with a second tender package going out in August for the remainder of the construction work.

Most of the construction will take place outside the existing school, which will minimize disruption for students and staff.

L. M. Montgomery Elementary was built in 1983. Current enrolment is 438 students.
