For more than three decades John and Geneva MacDonald have opened their doors to vulnerable children, and today they were recognized for their exceptional efforts.

Since 1990 the MacDonalds, who live in Milburn just outside Morell, have welcomed 110 children in need of care into their home. Minister of Social Development and Seniors, Barb Ramsay, presented them with a certificate of recognition this week for their extraordinary service.

“John and Gene have set an incredible example of what it means to serve your community and help people in need. The profound positive effect their contributions have had on so many vulnerable children speaks volumes about who they are as people, and the benefits of helping others. On behalf of Premier Rob Lantz and my department, I thank John and Geneva for their selfless efforts and for 35 years of compassionate service to the community.”

Like many jurisdictions across the country, Prince Edward Island is experiencing a shortage of foster parents. Foster Parents provide care to children found in need of protection unable to safely live with their parents or caregivers.

“Fostering is all about making these children feel seen, heard, and cared for when they need it most. We encourage anyone who can to consider taking the training and opening their doors to vulnerable children. You’ll not only be helping kids who need you, but you will learn so much about the challenges people can experience in life, and how strong children can be when faced with difficult situations.”
