Today, the Government of Prince Edward Island released two formal letters addressed to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC), calling for immediate and transparent investigations into serious allegations of foreign interference and money laundering involving entities operating within the province.

The letters, signed by Premier Rob Lantz and cabinet ministers, were sent to RCMP Commissioner Michael Duheme and FINTRAC CEO Sarah Paquet. They urge federal authorities to engage with individuals who have come forward with information and to determine whether the evidence warrants criminal or regulatory action.

“These allegations strike at the heart of our democratic values and the trust Islanders place in their institutions. Islanders deserve clarity. They deserve to know these matters are being handled by the proper investigative bodies.”

— Premier Lantz

The concerns stem from long-standing speculation and recent public statements made during an October 8, 2025, press conference on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. During that event, a former RCMP Superintendent suggested that information had been gathered that could warrant a criminal investigation related to activities in Prince Edward Island. Those comments renewed questions that have circulated for several years and prompted calls for clarity from Islanders.

In February, our government directed the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission (IRAC) to conduct an independent investigation surrounding land ownership. That investigation is currently underway with new powers given to IRAC by our government under the Lands Protection Act in 2022.

“Whether these claims are substantiated or not, Islanders must not be left in the dark. A credible, impartial investigation is needed to uphold public confidence and to reassure Islanders.”

— Cory Deagle, Minister of Housing, Lands & Communities

The Government of Prince Edward Island is committed to working collaboratively with federal and provincial authorities to complete a thorough investigation and to share any relevant information that could assist in an investigation.

Copies of the letters sent to the RCMP and FINTRAC are available online as PDFs.
