Province and City of Summerside land deal to provide space for new community health clinic

An agreement between the Province of Prince Edward Island and City of Summerside will provide the building site for a new community health centre.

Under the arrangement, Summerside will purchase the land, located at 425 Granville Street, remove existing buildings and prepare the site for construction. The province will purchase the site for a nominal fee with an agreement to build a new community health centre there. Health PEI will manage and operate the centre once built.

The building is budgeted to cost about $23.1 million in total and be available for use in Spring 2024.

“I am extremely pleased with this collaboration with the City of Summerside to develop this site, which will benefit local residents and help improve access to health care. This site will be home to a 48,000 square foot facility where Health PEI will offer collaborative, community-based health care.”

- Minister of Health and Wellness Ernie Hudson

The new centre will house a medical home and will include space for primary care, mental health and addictions services, provincial geriatrician program and public health nursing and dental services.

”By partnering with the Province to develop this project, we are investing in an important service for residents and an investment in the city overall,” said Mayor Basil Stewart. “We have always viewed our role as making sound public investments in projects that have the most potential to spur additional private sector investment and removing barriers that hinder that advancement, which this project does.”

Rehabilitating the site minimizes the harm done by vacant and abandoned properties, restoring that part of the city to productive use, said Stewart. He said the investment in the site is expected to be returned many times over through serving Summerside residents and growing the area’s tax base.

Dr. Michael Gardam, Health PEI’s Chief Executive Officer, said the development will replace the existing Harbourside Health Centre, offering an improved environment for staff, patients and clients to provide team-based care.

“The new site will allow our health care teams to work side by side in a modern facility intentionally designed for the collaborative care we are embracing as a health care system,” he said. “Investing in the spaces we need to offer the best care is part of our way toward better care, and we are pleased to be a part of this partnership with the City of Summerside and the Province.”
