Share the road this month – and always
Island motorists are reminded during May’s Motorcycle Safety Month to share the road with all vehicles -- whether they are on two, three, or four wheels.
“Islanders look forward to the arrival of the spring season when motorcycles return to our roads, and their fellow drivers may be seeing them for the first time after a long winter season,” Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Paula Biggar said. “Please be aware of your surroundings and put away mobile devices, which are prohibited while driving. It only takes a second of distracted driving for a potential incident that could lead to an injury or a fatality.”
Drivers who use a hand-held communication device while driving could face fines from $575 to $1275 and 5 demerit points upon conviction.
“If we can save one life by sharing safety information for motorists, then our goal has been achieved,” said Reagh Sherren, regional motorist awareness coordinator with the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. “Safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
