Statement by Honourable Barb Ramsay on International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Hon. Barb Ramsay, Minister of Social Development and Seniors, issued the following statement to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities:

“Each year on December 3, we recognize the United Nations’ International Day of Persons with Disabilities to celebrate the contributions and achievements of Islanders living with disabilities. 

Our government is committed to removing barriers so Islanders with disabilities feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to fully participate in everyday life.

Earlier this year, we launched a comprehensive review of the AccessAbility Supports and Residential Services programs. That work is now nearing completion, and we look forward to releasing the full report and its recommendations to Islanders in the near future.

We remain committed to working closely with community organizations to ensure inclusion is a priority across our province and we will continue to strengthen these collaborations moving forward. 

Recently, our provincial government announced the Workforce Adaption Fund, which is coordinated through ResourceAbilities. The fund is designed to improve accessibility in commercial and non-profit spaces to create more inclusive environments for employees and clients with disabilities.  

Today, I invite all Islanders to attend Charlottetown’s first-ever Accessibility and Inclusion Expo from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Simmons Sports Centre in Charlottetown. This free event is an opportunity to learn more about programs, services and supports available to people with disabilities.

Together, let’s work to remove barriers and build an inclusive society for all Islanders.”
