Hon. Rob Lantz, Premier of Prince Edward Island, issued the following statement:

“June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day to recognize and celebrate the history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

The day was first declared in 1996 and was formerly known as National Aboriginal Day. Celebrated annually on June 21, it is an important time to reflect on the many contributions and achievements of Indigenous peoples in both PEI and Canada.

The Government of Prince Edward Island is committed to helping advance initiatives and programs that support Indigenous communities across PEI and the path to reconciliation.

We encourage all Islanders to learn more about the culture and heritage of Indigenous peoples by participating in activities and events happening across the Island on June 21 and throughout the year.  Mi’kmaq culture and history can also be explored by visiting Abegweit First Nation and Lennox Island First Nation.

Islanders and visitors are invited to join the Native Council of PEI’s celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day at Confederation Landing in Charlottetown, Saturday, June 21 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.”
