Summerside Youth to Benefit from Project Backpack

September 26, 2025

A longstanding program in Summerside is making a meaningful difference in the lives of young people in need thanks to continued support from the provincial government.

Project Backpack helps support youth and their families by providing weekly backpack deliveries to their doorsteps that contain nutritious food, family activities, gift cards and other items that can provide stability when it’s needed most.

“Our government is proud to have supported Project Backpack at BGC Prince County, the former Boys and Girls Club, at the Summerside location since 2020. What began as a pilot program supported by the province has since evolved into a well-established initiative. So many local children benefit from the program, and it aligns with our goals to reduce food insecurity and to support our most vulnerable residents. BGC is a cornerstone of Summerside, and we thank the organization for everything it does to support local children and families.”

BGC Prince County has been offering Project Backpack at its Summerside location since 2020 when it received a $20,000 grant from the province. Since then, the project has grown, and this year it will receive $97,000 from the Department of Social Development and Seniors.

“BGC Prince County is grateful for the continued support and partnership with the province of PEI regarding our Project Backpack Program that supports more than 70 families in need,” said BGC Prince County Executive Director Adam Binkley. “Vulnerable Prince County families depend on this initiative, and our organization delivers consistently every week. We could not do what we do without this critical funding as we continue dedicated efforts to reduce food insecurity within our Province and enhance the standard of living for all program participants.”
