Islanders invited to serve on new Tourism PEI board of directors

February 8, 2019

Creating jobs for Islanders

The provincial government is recruiting qualified and motivated individuals to serve on a new Board of Directors for Tourism PEI.

“This new board will give Islanders a greater say in the strategic direction of Tourism PEI, strengthen ties with industry, and help us maintain the incredible momentum we’ve seen in the industry over the last five years,” Economic Development and Tourism Minister Chris Palmer said.  “This was a key recommendation during consultations with industry in 2017, following the release of the Vision 2021 tourism strategy.”

In the fall of 2018 the PEI legislature approved changes to the Tourism PEI Act to allow for the creation of a new board of directors.

"It is essential that industry and government work together to shape the future direction of Tourism on Prince Edward Island," Resort Municipality Mayor and Governance Committee member Matthew Jelley said. "Tourism operators and member associations can bring unique perspectives and new ideas to the table that can only come from people fully invested in the tourism industry."

Islanders can apply for a seat on the new board through Engage PEI. Applications will be accepted until March 8, 2019.

An improved governance model for Tourism PEI was a recommendation out of “Growing Tourism Together….A discussion paper on a New Framework for Government and Industry Working Together”, a follow up to Vision 2021, commissioned by Tourism PEI.

Tourism is vital for the economic health of our province. The industry employs over 7,700 full time equivalent workers and contributes more than $450 million to the provincial economy every year.
