First cases of influenza and RSV confirmed in PEI

October 17, 2025

The Chief Public Health Office is reporting the first lab-confirmed cases of influenza A and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) for the 2025–26 respiratory season in Prince Edward Island.

This early activity is consistent with what’s being seen in neighbouring provinces and is a reminder that respiratory illness season is beginning. COVID-19 activity also remains present in the province.

Islanders are encouraged to protect themselves and others by getting vaccinated.

  • Influenza and COVID-19 vaccines are free and available at local pharmacies, Public Health Nursing clinics, physician or nurse practitioner offices.
  • For the first time, RSV vaccine is available for adults at Public Health Nursing clinics for those aged 75 and older, those who are between the ages of 60-74 and have chronic lung conditions such as COPD or lung cancer, and for residents aged 60 and older living in long-term care and community care facilities.

A new RSV infant protection program is also in place this season, offered in hospital to protect PEI’s youngest and most vulnerable residents.

Vaccination remains the best defense against severe illness and hospitalization. Islanders are also encouraged to stay home when sick, cover coughs and sneezes, and wash hands often.

Regular updates on respiratory illness activity in PEI will be available through the PEI Respiratory Illness Summary posted online.

To book a vaccination, Islanders can:

  • Call Public Health Nursing toll-free: 1-844-975-3303
  • Visit: Skip the Waiting Room
  • Contact your local pharmacy, family doctor, or nurse practitioner
