Our History
The first public library in Borden officially opened on January 9th, 1935 as part of the PEI Carnegie Demonstration Project which established free public library services in communities across the province. The project was funded from 1933-1936 by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The library occupied a room in Borden’s newly built Town Hall. The local branch of the Women’s Institute was heavily credited for the construction of this building and for advocating for the establishment of a library branch in the community. The Borden Library was the 20th branch established in PEI under the Carnegie Demonstration.
For the majority of its existence, the library has been located within the community’s Town Hall. In 1995, when the Town of Borden and the surrounding community of Carleton amalgamated, the branch’s name was officially changed to the Borden-Carleton Public Library.
The library is currently situated in the G.C. Bell Civic Building, which also houses the local fire hall. The latest renovations occurred to the library’s portion of the building in 2014, in order to expand the space. This location continues to be the home of the Borden-Carleton Public Library.
