Our History
The first public library in Georgetown officially opened on July 14, 1934 as part of the PEI Carnegie Demonstration Project which established free public library services in communities across the province. The project was funded from 1933-1936 by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The Library was located within an upstairs room in the local Post Office.
The Library in Georgetown remained within the local Post Office building until 1985. During this year, a new Civic Centre building was established which became the home of the library, along with the local Town Office and Fire Hall. The library was housed in the Civic Centre until 2021, when it was moved into the local Georgetown Elementary School. At this new location, the library was to function as a public and school library. Georgetown Elementary continues to be the home of the Library.
The name of the library in Georgetown was inspired by Genevieve Soloman, who served as a Librarian in Georgetown for 40+ years. While originally known as the Georgetown Public Library, the library was renamed as the Georgetown Genevieve Soloman Memorial Library in order to commemorate her contribution. She is the longest serving library employee within PEI Public Library Service’s history.
