Our History
The first public library in Kensington officially opened on February 8th, 1934 as part of the PEI Carnegie Demonstration Project which established free public library services in communities across the province. The project was funded from 1933-1936 by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The library was located on the first floor of the local Town Hall.
The library has occupied various locations over the years. In 1957, it was relocated to the old Post Office building where it remained until 1993 when it was moved to the second floor of the Kensington Community Centre. In 1995, the library was then relocated to the old Kensington Railway Station. It was with this move to the train station that the name of the library changed from the Kensington Public Library to the Kensington Heritage Library. In 2002, the library then moved back from the train station to the local Town Hall.
In 2012, due to local fundraising efforts and with the help of the Summerside Rotary Club, the library was moved to a newly renovated building on Commercial Street. This location continues to be the home of the Kensington Heritage Library.
