Our History
The first public library in Tignish officially opened in November, 1933 as part of the PEI Carnegie Demonstration Project which established free public library services in communities across the province. The project was funded from 1933-1936 by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The library was located on the first floor of the local Town Hall.
The library has occupied various locations over the years. In 1949, the library had to close due to the rent of the building it occupied expiring. The community then launched a public fundraising campaign and built a designated “cottage style” building, which officially open to the public on December 15th, 1950. The library remained in this location until 1985-86, when the library moved to the Dalton Centre (a joint community centre, museum, and library) which was attached to the local elementary school. On March 6th, 1991, the library was then relocated to the newly renovated Town Centre. In June 1999, the library moved again to a new building shared with the Tignish Museum and Access PEI office. This building - now known as the Tignish Cultural Centre - continues to be the home of the Tignish Public Library.
