Our History
The first public library in Tyne Valley officially opened on February 27th, 1934 as part of the PEI Carnegie Demonstration Project which established free public library services in communities across the province. The project was funded from 1933-1936 by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The first library was located within a rented room in the “Gents Furnishing Store.”
The library has occupied various locations over the years. In 1954, it was moved into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Vass, with Mrs. Vass overseeing the service. During the summer of 1964, a group of women formed a library committee led by Mrs. Jean Lidstone and launched a special campaign to raise funds to relocate the library to more suitable quarters. The result of this campaign was the library moving into a room next to the local Fire Hall. In 1997, the library was moved to a part of the former Royal Bank building. Finally, during 2006, the library re-opened in the former Credit Union Building, which it shared with the local Village office. This building continues to be the home of the Tyne Valley Public Library.
