Island families and individuals unable to obtain or maintain adequate housing due to a low household income, poor housing conditions, or other special circumstances may be eligible for supported housing through the Family Housing Program. Eligible applicants may be approved for:

  • Government-owned housing: Bachelor to four-bedroom units are equipped with essential appliances and utility services. Tenants must supply their own furniture and maintain tenant’s insurance coverage. Most families pay 25% of their household income for rent and cover the cost for heat and electricity, although adjustments may be applied to assist with heating costs in some cases. Family housing units are in Alberton, Charlottetown, Georgetown, Montague, Mt. Stewart, O'Leary, Souris, Summerside, and Tignish and administered through a local housing board.
  • Landlord-owned housing: Vouchers to assist with the cost of rent in privately owned units in the community.  

Am I eligible for supported housing?

Your eligibility for supported housing will be assessed by a local housing board using the following criteria:

  • Number of dependents living with you;
  • Annual household income (see income-threshold table below);
  • Ration of housing cost to income, i.e. spending 30% or more of household income for suitable housing
  • Condition of your current dwelling;
  • Other factors, including health status of family members and the availability of a unit suitable to your family’s need.

What do I need to apply for Family Housing?

Complete the online form below or the form included on the Family Housing Application brochure.

You may be asked to provide:

  • Identity and contact details
  • Personal information for you and your spouse (if applicable) including:
    • Date of Birth;
    • Social Insurance Number; and
    • PEI Health Card Number

Once you submit your completed application, a Housing Services representative will contact you to schedule an appointment. Please have the following income and expense documents available for review at your appointment:

  • Recent CRA Notice of Assessment & Tax summary;
  • Documents to confirm current residence (valid PEI driver licence, utility bills with address, lease agreement) 
  • Verification of heat/electricity expenses
  • Other income documents, if applicable, such as pay stubs, pension verification, property tax insurance statements
