In 2016/2017, the Government of Prince Edward Island developed a 10-year energy strategy to reduce energy use, establish cleaner and locally produced energy sources and moderate future energy price increases. There have been many changes that require the province to rethink and update its strategy, including the commitment to be net zero by 2040. Government is developing a new energy strategy for 2026-2035.

Guiding principles for energy strategy
- Lower greenhouse gas emissions
- Actions and decisions should be cost-effective
- Local economic opportunities
The energy strategy will result in energy savings for Islanders and greater self-sufficiency by reducing our reliance on imported fossil fuels. It will also translate into good jobs and economic opportunity with an increase in retrofitting projects and more energy produced locally.
