Get Your Summer Read On

Island public libraries will be kicking off the TD Summer Reading Club with special events on Saturday, June 25

“Studies show that children who keep reading throughout the summer do better when they return to school in the fall,” said Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Doug Currie. “Visiting a local library branch is an easy way for families to encourage a love of reading, through programs like the TD Summer Reading Club.”

On June 25, many libraries will launch the TD Summer Reading Club with ‘Get Your Summer Read On’ events. Montague Rotary Library will host the provincial launch of the TD Summer Reading Club, with a petting zoo, Go!PEI's GO!Cart, the Montague Fire Department’s obstacle course, popcorn, games, and face painting. The Confederation Centre Public Library will celebrate with The Paper Bag Princess StoryMob and there will many more “Wild!”-themed events at other branches throughout the province.

Children can register for the reading club at their local library and pick up a free reading kit, which includes a notebook and stickers. Kits are also available for children with print disabilities. Families can also participate online www.tdsummerreadingclub.ca where they can read free e-books, including two new stories created exclusively for the TD Summer Reading Club, one written in English by author Jess Keating and one written in French by author Anne Bernard-Lenoir.

Activities will continue in library branches throughout the province during July and August. For a complete event listing, visit the Public Library Service’s events page at http://www.library.pe.ca/events
