Motorists, farmers need to share the road
Island motorists are asked to be cautious and patient encountering farm equipment on the highway.
Large and slow-moving farm equipment is more prevalent on Island highways during the busy spring planting season. With the increased possibility of accidents, it is important for motorists to be aware and for farmers to take safety precautions.
“The Prince Edward Island Federation of Agriculture encourages all farmers to operate their equipment in a safe and responsible manner,” said Matt Hughes, program officer with the Federation. “It is equally important for motorists to approach farm equipment on the highway with caution and to pass with care.”
The Federation has prepared safety tips for farm equipment operators (http://peifa.ca/safety-tips-for-farm-equipment-on-island-roads/) which include the use of slow moving vehicle signs, proper lighting and operating procedures.
“It is important to keep our highways safe and for everyone to drive carefully,” Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Robert Henderson said. “I wish everyone in the industry a safe and productive growing season.”
The agriculture industry of Prince Edward Island is a key contributor to the provincial economy. The industry generates approximately half-a-billion dollars in farm cash receipts annually and employs more than 4,000 people.
