October 2016 is declared as Community Living Month

Presented by Hon. Tina Mundy, Minister of Family and Human Services at Government House on the ocassion of a PEI Association for Community Living Tea and Declaration

On behalf of Premier Wade MacLauchlan and the province of Prince Edward Island, it is my honour to declare October as Community Living Month.

Community Living Month is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness and promote the inclusion of people with an intellectual disability, so that we can create a culture of inclusion throughout our Island where everyone feels that they belong.

I want to congratulate the PEI Association for Community Living on this first recognition event for your organization.

It’s a long-overdue acknowledgment of the important work you do every day, which is often behind the scenes.

Government is very proud to partner with – and support – the association and the important programs you deliver.

It is important that we continue to work together to support people with intellectual disabilities and their families so that – as your vision statement says -- “everyone can participate fully in all aspects of community life.”

As we begin this celebration of Community Living Month, I hope we will all make an effort to recognize that people with an intellectual disability can be – and are – valuable members of our families, our communities and our province.

We work together, we play together, and collectively we create an inclusive, diverse and dynamic society.

This month, let’s celebrate everyone - our friends and neighbours, our sons and daughters, our brothers and sisters - who overcome challenges each day, and celebrate life’s opportunities -- whenever and wherever they are.
