The Provincial Government is actively working with all partners, led by the federal government, to pursue additional ferry service between Wood Islands and Caribou.

The ferry is a critical transport and economic link between the Island and the mainland and the province has been working to find a solution since the second ferry was taken out of service.

"The Government of Prince Edward Island recognizes the importance of a full ferry service and finding a solution is absolutely a priority. We are in close contact with all involved and discussions are ongoing to find a resolution as quickly as possible," said Premier MacLauchlan. "Within 24 hours of being informed of the reduced service our government has had numerous discussions with officials to pursue a desirable solution."

As ferry services fall under federal jurisdiction, the Premier and senior officials from the province are in contact with Transport Canada and Northumberland Ferries Ltd.  to express Prince Edward Island’s concerns regarding the decreased amount of crossings and of the importance of the ferry to Prince Edward Island’s economy.

"The lack of initiative on the part of the Transport Canada and Northumberland Ferries Ltd is disappointing. Our government has underlined the necessity of finding a swift solution to Transport Canada and urges them to take all actions to ensure Prince Edward Island's needs are met," said the Premier.

"Full ferry service is crucial to our tourism industry and our focus must be on finding a solution," said Economic Development and Tourism Minister Heath MacDonald. "While passenger traffic is on par with previous years, we will continue to work with our partners and operators with a business-like approach."
