Dennis King, Premier of Prince Edward Island issued the following statement on World Environment Day, June 5, 2021:

“World Environment Day encourages all of us to appreciate nature and to reflect on the positive actions we can take to leave a cleaner, healthier planet for generations to come.

This year’s theme is Ecosystem Restoration, and it aims to bring attention to the immediate need to restore the Earth’s ecosystems.

Every Islander can take action in their daily lives to help lessen their impact on the environment. Environmental challenges – climate change first among them – affect everyone, and it is up to all of us to work together to face them.

PEI has set bold targets to become Canada’s first net- zero energy province by 2030 and to have net- zero emissions by 2040. We are working to reduce our greenhouse gases, support clean tech, plant more trees, and transition to renewable energy sources. With transportation being one of the biggest sources of emissions on the Island, we are committed to building more sustainable options from tip-to-tip through new active transportation paths and trails, incentives for electric vehicles and establishing a new rural transit system.

I encourage all Islanders to do their part to protect our environment.  To take care of ourselves, we must take care of nature.

By working together we can reduce air pollution, fight climate change, and build a better world for our children and grandchildren - one that is cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable."
