Summer school students head back to class

Many students are heading back to school this week to improve their grades or English language skills.

More than 170 high school students from across the Island are registered for morning summer school at Colonel Gray Senior High School from July 4 to August 14. The summer learning environment offers students smaller class sizes and only one course to focus on.

“This is value-added programming that gives students extra opportunity to graduate sooner or get courses they need to get into post-secondary programs,” said Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Doug Currie. “Summer school is also an excellent opportunity for new immigrant students to improve their English language skills and keep up in the classroom later.”

Summer courses offered this year include:

• English as an Additional Language (four different courses);

• Grades 10, 11 and 12 English; and

• Grades 11 and 12 Co-op Work Study.

Approximately 75 students are registered in English as an Additional Language courses, 75 in English courses, and 20 in the co-op program.

Summer school is taught by certified teachers and students take the same exams that are offered during the academic year. Courses are free to eligible students.
