Communities, Land and Environment Minister Robert Mitchell presents PEI Watershed Alliance Chair Mike Durant with $2,000 to support shoreline clean-up in celebration of this year’s World Environment Day June 5.

In honour of this year’s World Environment Day, the provincial government is providing $2,000 to the PEI Watershed Alliance for shoreline cleanup in June.

This coming Monday, June 5 marks the annual celebration, which is hosted by Canada this year in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of Confederation. This year’s theme is “Connecting people to nature.”

“Our watershed members are leaders when it comes to connecting with and protecting our natural environment here on Prince Edward Island,” Communities, Land and Environment Minister Robert Mitchell said. “Watershed groups are working hard this time of year to ensure Islanders and visitors can enjoy the beautiful nature our province has to offer, and this is a small token of our appreciation in celebration of World Environment Day.”

World Environment Day celebrates positive environmental action across the globe and is celebrated by thousands of communities. Islanders are encouraged to get outside and ‘connect with nature’ this weekend by spending time in a local park or green space, or by visiting one of the many beautiful national parks or historic sites across the province that can be enjoyed free of admission fees throughout 2017.

"P.E.I. is blessed with hundreds of kilometres of beaches, and this time of the year many Island watershed groups are actively involved in assessment and clean-up activities,” said Mike Durant, chair of the Prince Edward Island Watershed Alliance. “These funds will help groups to keep Island beaches rated among the best in the world to explore and enjoy."
