Council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons

The Council is the regulatory body which governs the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island.

What is the function of the council?

  • (a) to regulate the practice of medicine, to provide for the licensing and registration of physicians, to exercise disciplinary measures and to govern its members in accordance with the Medical Act and the regulations;
  • (b) to establish, maintain and ensure adherence to standards of qualification and practice for the practice of medicine;
  • (c) to promote good standards of knowledge and skill among its members;
  • (d) to establish, maintain and ensure adherence to standards of professional ethics among its members; and
  • (e) to administer this Part, in order that the interest of the public in obtaining a high standard of medical services is served. 1987,c.47,s.3.

How many people are on the council?

The Council shall consist of:

  • (a) not less than six and not more than nine members of the College elected in the manner provided by this Act;
  • (b) one member of the College appointed by the Minister, who may be the Minister if he is a member of the College; and
  • (c) two lay persons appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council who are not members of the College, but whose names are on a panel of not less than four persons nominated by the Council.

What are the nomination requirements?

The Minister appoints two lay members from a list of not less than four names nominated by the Council.

Will I get paid?

No remuneration

What is the time commitment for the council?

Six meetings/yr. (three to four hrs each plus advance prep). AGM. Special meetings, as required. Sub-committees as nominated at AGM. One of two standing committees. If nominated to the Executive, a teleconference every second week (20-30 min. plus advance review).

Members of Council shall be elected or appointed to office for a term of three years. One reappointment is the practice, i.e. two consecutive terms.
