Poverty Elimination Council
The Prince Edward Island Poverty Elimination Council (the ‘Council’) was created by the Poverty Elimination Strategy Act.
What is the function of the Council?
The purpose of the Poverty Elimination Strategy Act is to guide government in the creation and implementation of a long-term strategy to eliminate poverty. The Council provides advice to the Minister on the content of the strategy; poverty and social inclusion indicators; proposed programs, policies, and initiatives; and the baseline and indicators used to measure the performance of the strategy. The Council monitors the implementation of the strategy, facilitates community involvement in the development and implementation of the strategy, and assists the Minister with the preparation of the Annual Report as required in the Act.
How many people are on the Council?
The Council is to consist of at least 7 persons, but not more than 11 persons, appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council.
What are the requirements of Council members?
Gender and diversity are recognized as significant factors which influence poverty. Women, immigrants and refugees, members of the BIPOC community, and members of the LGBTQ2S+ community are all at greater risk of experiencing poverty. It is expected that council members will be representative and provide perspectives of a broad range of citizens. A Gender and Diversity lens will be applied when working with Engage PEI to ensure a high degree of diversity in the make-up of the Poverty Elimination Council. Additionally, knowledge of government programs and services related to areas of social policy such as health, education, justice and social programs is considered an asset.
What are the nomination requirements?
Council members will be appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council.
Will I get paid?
Chair - $113/diem and Members - $73/diem.
What is the time commitment of the Council?
The council shall meet at least four times a year, at the call of the chair.
