Public Schools Branch Board of Trustees

The Public Schools Branch (PSB) is responsible for the English language school system across the province - which consists of approximately 4,000 employees, 56 schools, and over 20,500 students. A hybrid board of eight elected and three appointed trustees oversee the day-to-day operations of the PSB. The smooth operation of the PSB relies on the civic participation of well-qualified and interested individuals as trustees. There is currently one vacancy as an appointed trustee available on the PSB board.

Experience in the following areas would be considered assets:

  • knowledge of the education system
  • understanding of good business practices
  • policy development experience
  • strategic thinking
  • finance and/or financial management experience
  • human resource management
  • board governance
  • legal/risk management

Acting as a group, the trustees are responsible for overseeing the education authorities’ strategic planning, budgeting and expenditures, and issues pertaining to school transportation, facilities, administration, and human resources.

The PSB Director, who serves as the organization’s CEO, reports directly to the Board of Trustees. The PSB structure includes the Director’s office and six departments (Human Resources, Finance, Property Management, Student Services, Transportation and Risk Management, and English/French as an Additional Language) each providing numerous services to students, parents, staff, other educational partners, and the public.

The day-to-day operations of the schools and their functioning as safe learning environments and workplaces are within the purview of the trustees. The Board of Trustees, however, are not responsible for the development of curricula and/or the professional development of teachers. Trustees must be ready to be in dialogue with, and accountable to, families and students across the province, as well as the provincial Department of Education and Early Years and other stakeholders. The work is collaborative in nature and requires good communicators with open minds and sound judgment.
