Health PEI Nursing Strategy: 2017-2020

Nurses form the largest workforce within our health care system and, as such, play an instrumental role in defining the care and services provided to Islanders every day. Approximately 1,900 nurses work in health care settings across the province, including 18 nurse practitioners, 1,353 registered nurses, and 528 licensed practical nurses.

What is the purpose of the strategy?

The Health PEI Nursing Strategy: 2017-2020 sets direction for nursing within the province’s publically funded health care system.

It will ensure nurses are delivering the right care, in the right place, by the right provider, while taking into consideration current nursing positions and the future direction of the profession. It also builds upon the ways in which nurses are committed to achieving an improved patient and family/caregiver experience by seeking their input and providing quality patient care that is safe, effective and efficient.

How was the strategy developed?

In December 2015, the Nursing Strategy Steering Committee was formed to oversee the development of a multi-year nursing strategy for Health PEI. Consultations were carried out with frontline nurses, educational institutions, nursing associations and unions, and other health care providers to inform the committee developing the nursing strategy.

What are the key priorities?

The three-year strategy outlines four strategic pillars, with recommended actions for maintaining and advancing the nursing workforce:

  • workforce capacity
  • engagement and leadership
  • professional practice
  • innovation

How will the strategy’s objectives be achieved?

The Provincial Nursing Leadership Committee will oversee the nursing strategy during the next three years.

The committee will collaborate with nursing leaders, other health care providers, patients, family/caregiver representatives, professional organizations, unions, educational institutions, and members of Health PEI’s Senior Management Group to achieve the priorities and objectives outlined in the strategy.
