Language Training

There are two official languages in Canada: English and French. Studying and improving your language abilities will help you to settle in Prince Edward Island.

In PEI, English remains the primary language spoken. While not officially a bilingual province, PEI is home to a vibrant Acadian and Francophone community. Knowledge of both languages is an asset when looking for employment in PEI.

Some immigration pathways to Canada require a minimum language proficiency that you will need to meet. There are different programs through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the PEI Office of Immigration that allow you to immigrate to Canada permanently.

Community Supports for Language Training

Immigrant and Refugee Services Association PEI (IRSA) can provide information on English language training and assess your language skills.

La Coopérative d'intégration francophone de l'Î.-P.-É.(CIF) can provide information on French language training and can assess your language skills.

The EAL Volunteer Tutoring Program is a partnership between IRSA and the PEI Public Library Service. Volunteer tutors from the local community are matched with newcomers who wish to learn English with the help of a tutor.
