The Interministerial Women's Secretariat is a government body that works to promote the legal, health, social and economic equality of women. The Secretariat is mandated to partner with the community on projects to promote the status of women.
As part of its mandate, the Interministerial Women’s Secretariat works in partnership with Island women’s organizations to develop projects, programs and services that benefit women from Prince Edward Island.
With support from Women and Gender Equality Canada, through the National Action Plan to End Gender Based Violence, $300,000 in funding is available to support projects that focus on the prevention of violence against women and gender-based violence in Prince Edward Island.
What are the funding objectives?
The theme this year is tech-facilitated gender-based violence, but other themes will be considered. The objective of the Violence Against Women Prevention Grant is to provide project funding to community organizations for innovative projects that will enhance awareness, education and action towards preventing violence against women in Prince Edward Island.
What are the eligibility requirements?
- Organizations must have capacity to enter into a legal agreement to receive funding (i.e., a provincial incorporation number, insurance coverages and good standing with Workers Compensation Board). Please see Sample Contract.
- Organizations with approved projects will be required to sign a project contract and adhere to the requirements of the contract.
- All budgets need to clearly demonstrate how proposed expenditures are related to the project. Eligible expenditures include the following:
- Salaries and benefits;
- Administrative costs associated with the project (up to 15% of total budget);
- Honoraria;
- Professional fees related to the project;
- Facility rental and utilities;
- Office equipment;
- Materials and supplies;
- Publicity and promotion;
- In-province travel;
- Evaluation.
How will applications be assessed?
The Interministerial Women's Secretariat grant applications will be assessed and graded on a point system based on the applicant’s ability to communicate how it meets the objectives of the funding program as expressed by the following criteria:
- Does the proposal show a strong focus on prevention measures that are likely to be effective? (15 points)
- Do the organization’s principles, objectives and activities support legal, health, social and economic equality for women? Please describe how. (10 points)
- Does the proposal clearly describe the project activities? Does it clearly describe the project workplan and proposed activities and explains their purposes? (15 Points)
- Is the project likely to succeed (for example, does it propose realistic timelines and achievable goals? (15 points)
- Is the project budget clear, and is it an appropriate financial request for the proposed activities? (10 points)
- Does the proposal show evidence-based ways to respond to preventing violence against women and/or girls or reduce harm? (for example, connection to proven best practices, modelled on programs that have been well-evaluated, etc.) (10 points)
- Does the proposal clearly identify anticipated project outcomes and describe how the project will be evaluated? (15 points)
- Does the proposal provide examples of community support for the project (for example, letters of support that clearly identify the benefits of funding this project)? (5 points)
- If your organization previously received funding from the Interministerial Women’s Secretariat, have all contractual obligations been fulfilled and/or brought up to date? Were reports submitted on time according to the established timelines? (5 pts)
Note: For each project you must submit a minimum of one letter of support from stakeholders and/or project partners in order to be considered for funding.
What is the application process?
Applications must be received by 4:00 pm, November 3, 2025, and must meet the eligibility requirements (see ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS above). Any submissions received after this will not be considered.
Applications that do not meet the eligibility requirements will be immediately disqualified. Applications will be assessed and graded on a point system based on the applicant’s ability to communicate how it meets the objectives of the funding program as expressed by the assessment criteria.
Successful applicants will be notified by the International Day of the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25, 2025).
What do I need to include with my application package?
Your funding application must include the following:
- completed application form.
- all necessary attachments describing organizational and project information;
- detailed budget that clearly outlines all expenses and revenues for the project (this would include other sources of funding and/or in-kind support); and
- minimum of one letter of support for your project from stakeholders and/or project partners.
How do I submit my application?
Please submit your completed application form [live link] by 4:00 pm on November 3, 2025. All submissions are time stamped, and any submissions received after this will be disqualified. There is no need to submit a hard copy of your application this year; but we suggest you have a copy for your records to cut and paste from in case there are any challenges with submitting your electronic form (so you do not need to create a new application from scratch). Submitting an application does not guarantee funding. The number of projects that can be supported and the degree of support a project receives will be determined by the program budget. Not all qualified applicants are guaranteed funding. These are one-time only grants. As determined by the review committee, approved funding amounts may be different from the amounts outlined in the application.
